Lecture: Two Sides of the Same Coin: Qianlong Emperor and Suzhou Society Reconciled in Burgeoning Life in a Resplendent Age
Is Burgeoning Life in a Resplendent Age a realistic depiction of its painter Xu Yang¡¦s hometown Suzhou? Is it a political painting declaring the peaceful and prosperous reign under the Qianlong emperor¡¦s rule? Or, are the roles played by realism and propaganda, Suzhou and the Qing court, as well as Xu Yang and the Qianlong emperor in Burgeoning Life in a Resplendent Age two sides of the same coin? This talk will discuss the multivalent character of Burgeoning Life in a Resplendent Age from four aspects: The dual role of Xu Yang as a native representative and a court painter; the exchange between the court and local society in the context of the imperial visits; the formula of Chinese cityscape; as well as how Xu Yang balanced local pride and the Qianlong emperor¡¦s political agenda.
