Gallery Tour of the exhibitions “Story of the Horse” and “A Eulogy of Hong Kong Landscape in Painting: The Art of Huang Bore” The “Story of the Horse” exhibition is held to celebrate Hong Kong’s hosting of the equestrian events of the 2008 Olympic Games. 40 exhibits selected from the collections of the Hong Kong Museum of Art will be showcased. The exhibits include various art forms focusing on the horse in Chinese art and culture as well as modern Hong Kong art. The horse is explored from 4 perspectives: its role in ancient China; the literati essence in Chinese horse paintings; as decoration and symbol; and the horse in modern art. Huang Bore (1901 – 1968) was an active defender of traditional Chinese painting and is commonly regarded as a forerunner in the renewal of the traditions of landscape painting. Thanks to the generous donations of his sons and their loan of ink paintings by the renowned painter, the Museum is able to hold an exhibition to rediscover Huang Bore’s art through the display of his magnificent paintings of Hong Kong’s beautiful natural landscapes. The tour of the “Story of the Horse” will be led by Ms Maria Mok, Assistant Curator I of the Museum. Mr. Raymond Tang, Assistant Curator I of the Museum will lead members on the tour for the exhibition on the “Art of Huang Bore”. A special free guided tour of both exhibitions has been organized for members in one single visit.

Lecture on “An 18th Century Ink Masterpiece: Luo Ping’s Ghost Amusement Scroll” by Dr. Yeewan Koon Of the many famous paintings in Chinese art history, perhaps none is as unusual as Luo Ping’s handscroll on ghosts. The rare subject-matter goes against conventional ideas of refined Chinese art, yet this Yangzhou painting was, and remains, a highly-prized object amongst literati scholars and connoisseurs. Luo Ping kept this painting by his side, using it as a calling card for later commissions. He is believed to have made versions of his painting for a handful of admirers. One rendition is now in the Xubaizhai Collection in the Hong Kong Museum of Art. After Luo’s death, the painting entered collections in South China and gained the accolade of being “One of the Four Great Treasures of Guangdong.” To date, the painting has collected over 100 inscriptions written on 25 metres of silk and paper. Why were scholars attracted to the depictions of fanciful ghosts? How did collectors and connoisseurs view this painting? These are some of the questions raised in this lecture that will touch on broader issues of how art can be entangled within the world of literature, science, and politics. Members will recall from our previous Newsletter that Dr. Yeewan Koon, Assistant Professor in the Fine Arts Department at the University of Hong Kong and a fellow at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, has agreed to give members a lecture on the paintings of ghosts and demons in late Imperial China. This is the chance to listen to her.

Free Members’ Evening “Otium Ludens” Leisure and Play: Ancient Relics of the Roman Empire The Friends of Hong Kong Museum of Art take great pleasure in inviting you to a free evening viewing of the exhibition of Otium Ludens at the Museum. Come and enjoy a relaxed evening with your friends and other members and wander amongst the ancient relics of the Roman Empire. Stabiae was a city in the vicinity of Mount Vesuvius which, together with Pompeii, was destroyed during the eruption of the volcano in 79 AD. The Otium Ludens exhibition features 170 works of art selected from several villas in Stabiae, including frescoes and stuccoed decorations as well as terracotta, glass, bronze, iron and marble objects and a complete installation of three wall sections, all of which tell a 2000-year old story of wealth, power, politics and lifestyle. Also on view at the Museum will be the second exhibition from the Open Dialogue Series featuring 38 major contemporary ink artists, with works drawn from the Museum collection and guest curated by Alice King. The exhibition will survey the transformation of ink painting through 3000 years of history to become a contemporary art form that is cross-media and cross boundary with new expressiveness and artistic vocabulary, yet strongly rooted in tradition. With the six-themes – Innovators to be Remembered, Beyond Tradition, Evolving City Life, Transformed Text, New Frontier and Is it Ink Art? – the exhibition starts with early pioneers of modern ink painting, including Mr. Lui Shou-kwan (呂壽琨), Mr. Liu Guosong (劉國松), Mr. Ding Yanrong (丁衍庸) and others, and looks forward to the infinite possibilities of the future development of ink art. Works by the Mainland and overseas masters, such as Mr. Wang Tiande (王天德), Mr. Cai Guoqiang (蔡國?), Mr. Ming Fay (費明杰) and others will also be featured.
We hope you will join us on this special evening and look forward to seeing you then. |
