Visit to Fotan Art Village Those who have not followed the art scene of Hong Kong closely may not realize that the epicentre of a lot of avant garde art activities has in recent years shifted to a few blocks of originally dilapidated and under utilized factory buildings around Fotan, not too far from the station of the same name along KCRC's rail-line to Lowu. The cluster of galleries, studios and artists' workshops there now were mostly created by a group of graduates of the Fine Art Department of the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Due largely to their talent, persistence, sheer hard work ---- and mostly through a shared love of art---- the young artists have turned Fotan into the labyrinth of art studios not unlike the famous Factory 798 in Beijing. Every year, the artists' guild will organize an open day to welcome visitors to see for themselves their wonderful art creations. The Friends are fortunate in having been invited by the organizers to make a visit on 20th January at about 2.30 pm. An artist will be assigned to guide us through some selected studios where the artists will have their masterpieces on display. The visit will also include the workshop of one award winning ceramic artist, not part of the Chinese U group, who is also a member of the Friends.

TRIPS Watch this space - Myanmar over Chinese New Year
We are planning a very special one week trip over Chinese New Year to yet undiscovered parts of exotic Myanmar (Burma). Our journey will take us to Sittwe and Mrauk - U, where we will visit little known ethnic tribes and vanishing cultures amongst ancient temples and spectacular landscapes. We can also sit back and leisurely experience life along the Lemro River, whilst learning about the history and civilization of the region from Dr. Louis Gabaude, an expert on Buddhism in Southeast Asia with special interests in the history of ideas, interpretation, homiletics and the evolution of imagery. The places we are visiting are fascinating and well off the usual tourist treks and as Dr. Dabaude has devoted a great part of his life to the art, religion and philosophy of Buddhism, his passion for the culture of this region makes him the perfect guest lecturer. This very special journey of exploration is open to members of the Friends of the Hong Kong Museum of Art and their accompanying friends. (See separate flyer for details) |
